How to save a picture, logo, or clip art from a word document?
Have you ever been sent a word document that contained a picture, logo, or clip art that you needed to save to your computer? It might be a picture that you want to use on another document or you might want to save the picture so you can send it through email. People find this puzzling because you cannot just simply save the picture as it is really imbedded into the document itself. Of course there is always a way around this…
Below is an example of a word document that has a logo in it that I might want to save.
How to save a picture, logo, or clipart from a word document to your computer:
The usual way to save a picture is to right click on it and choose save or save picture as…However as you can see in the screenshot below, there is no option to do this. Therefore we are going to copy the picture and paste it into another program. In this tutorial we will paste this logo in mspaint which is a free program that all Windows users have.
- Open your word document. This applies to Word 97-2003 and word 2007.
- Left click on the logo or picture in the word document. This will put resizing dots around the picture to show you have selected it.
- Then right click your mouse on the selected picture.
- A menu will appear. Choose copy from the menu.
- Now open Paint. See below for instructions.
- Choose Edit from the top menu in Paint.
- In that menu choose paste.
- The picture, logo, or clipart you have copied from the word document will now be in thePaint program.
- Go to the File menu at the top.
- Choose save as… Choose a name for the picture and where you want to save the file. You can also choose to save as a .jpg .png .gif or more…
How to open Paint?
- Press the Win Key and the letter R to open the run box.
- Type in mspaint and then press ok.
ALSO
- Go to the start menu.
- Choose All programs.
- Choose Accessories.
- Choose Paint.
Notes on How to save a picture, logo, or clip art from a word document?

- You can also add a clipart from the word collections and then save it where you want it on your computer.

How to save a word 2007 document to be compatible with Word 97-2003
When I first started using Microsoft Word 2007 I had no idea that the files were not compatible with earlier versions of Word. It was not until I had sent a document created using Word 2007 in an email and received complaints from recipients not being able to open the file. At first I thought there was something wrong, because I had seen no mention of incompatible files on the internet or the packaging Office 2007 came in. Finally I realized that the file extensions were different. The old Word 97-2003 files were saved as .doc and the new Word 2007 are saved as .docx.I had just presumed that the programs would be compatible because all earlier upgrades had been. However they were not compatible and Microsoft word 97-2003 could not open a file with the extension .docx because it did not exist when these programs were created.
Luckily Word 2007 includes a feature that lets you save a document to be compatible with Word 97-2003.
How to save a document to be combatable with Word 97-2003?
If you want to save a document to be compatible to open in word 97-2003 you cannot simply automatically save the document because it will save as a .docx. Therefore you cannot click on the disk icon at the top to save your document.
- Go to the
at the top left corner.
- Choose Save As. Another menu will appear.
- Choose Word 97-2003 Document from the list.
- Choose where to save your file.
Is there any way to open a Word 2003 document in Word 2007?
Yes you can but you must download a compatibility pack from Microsoft. This will enable you to open Word 2007, PowerPoint 2007, and more in your Office 2003 program. You can also download the free Open office program. It will open .docx files already. See more details in the freeware section.
Go to the Microsoft website to download Word viewer
And you will also need Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats
Notes on saving a Word 2007 document to be compatible with a Word 97-2003:
- If you open a word 97-2003 document in word 2007 and then save it, it will save in the same format as the original file. However if you want to change the file to .docx then you must use save as to save the document.
- Just remember that the majority of user still have Word 2003 on their computers so it is very handy to be able to make a word 2007 document compatible for this.

How to use a custom watermark on different pages in your document
When you add a watermark to a document in Word 2007, by default, it will be added to your entire document. Therefore if you add a watermark to your document it seems that you have no control over where it will appear. Sometimes this is not what you want. Having the words confidential or do not copy spread across a title page or even a contents page does not always look good. In this tutorial I will show you step by step instructions on how to remove a watermark from one page in your document and also how to put a custom watermark on different pages. Once you know how to do this, you will be the one in control of watermarks in your document.
If you do not know how to add a watermark to a Word 2007 document then please seeAdd a watermark to Word 2007.
The first thing we will need to do is separate the pages with a section break. This way when we add a watermark it will only apply to the pages in the document that belong to a particular section. So in this example I am going to separate the title page and the table of contents pages from the rest of the document and not have a water mark on those first few pages.
How to separate the pages with a section break?
- Go to the end of the title page where you want to insert the section break.
- The section break will be inserted after or below where you have clicked your cursor on the page.
- Then go to the page layout tab.
- Press the drop down arrow next to Breaks.
- Choose Next Page from under the section breaks heading.
- To see the section break when you insert it go to the home tab. Press on theParagraph marks button that shows all the formatting like spaces and sections breaks in the document. See the screenshot below.
- Now you will be able to see the section break that you have inserted at the bottom of the title page.
- Insert another section break at the bottom of the contents page.
- The screenshot below shows the section break, the footer of the first title page and the header of the next page.
- Now that we have inserted section breaks we will want to separate the sections or unlink them. I want to separate the Introduction which is the start of the content, from the title and table of contents pages.
- First we need to go to the Introduction page. Double click in the header area of the page to activate this area for formatting. See my screenshot below. It shows a button that says Same as Previous.
- If you go to the top menu now. You can see everything has changed and there is aDesign tab. If we press on Link to Previous the Same as Previous button will disappear. This will unlink this page and any pages after it from the previous pages.
- If I press on Link to Previous again the button will appear again and we will be linking the pages together in the same section again.
- back to the page and get out of the header simply click on the page area.
How to remove a watermark from one page in your document?
In this example I am using since I have separated the document into sections I can simply add a water mark to the section section only. Or if I had already added a watermark, then separated the pages into sections, I can still remove the watermark. For example if I wanted to remove the watermark from the title section, simply double click in the header area, click on the watermark and move your cursor until it turns into a cross. Right click your mouse and a menu will appear. Choose cut. This will cut the watermark from this section and leave it in the other. If you try to remove the water the same way you put it there it will be removed from the whole document.
How to put a custom watermark on different pages in your document?
In this example I have linked the title page and the table of contents in the same sections, while the rest of the contents of the book is in another separate section. Therefore when I add a watermark and I want it on the second section I must be on that page, then add the watermark. Then I can go to the title page and click there and then add a different watermark to that page.

How to use and show all keyboard shortcuts in Word 2007
There is a great little trick that I actually discovered by accident to use keyboard shortcuts in Word 2007. If you press theALT key when you have a word document open, the shortcut keys appear over the button they apply to. Just try it for yourself. You will see thatAlt-F = Office Button, Alt-1 = Save, Alt-2 = Undo, Alt-3 = Redo, Alt-H = Home tab, Alt-N = Insert tab, Alt-P = Page Layout tab, Alt-S = References tab, Alt-M = Mailings tab, Alt-R =Review tab, Alt-V =View tab, Alt-L = Developer tab, and Alt-B = Acrobat tab. You might have different tabs enabled on your Word 2007 however what ever tabs you do have, they will show the keyboard shortcut for it. Below is a screen shot of what you will see.
This tutorial is also included in the free download: Word 2007 mini course.
How to see the keyboard shortcuts in Word 2007 for the individual tabs?
When you have a tab open, there are more keyboard shortcuts to see if you have used the ALT key to open the tab. For example if you go to the Insert tab by pressing ALT-N only then will you be able to see the extra shortcuts available.
If you click on the Insert tab with your mouse you will not be able to see these individual tab shortcuts. See the screen shot below. To get to this stage this is what I pressed.
- I pressed the ALT key only to see what the shortcuts are and to start the process. See above screen shot for the first step.
- Then I pressed N only to get to the insert tab.
- Now I can see all the shortcuts for the Insert tab. Now if I press a letter listed below it will be like pushing that button.
